First ever commercial electric aircraft to be flying in the air

There was a time when we could be overwhelmed by a new electric car. Now it seems to be normal to know about the first ever electric airplane. This electrically powered airplane is reported to be the first commercial electric airplane in the world. This tantalizing electric aircraft is available next year for 89 000 USD.

This sustainable flying marvel called the Yuneec E430 is a dual seat aircraft which is powered by a single electric engine. This zero emissions model of airplane is made of light weight composite material and requires 3 hours for a charging via a domestic 230 volt power point to produce two and half hours of flight time on a single charge.

It was already tested by pilot Shun Xun to make its first flight in Chine on June 12. This ecologically friendly aircraft offers low maintenance operation. Additionally, the E430 aircraft is said to be very intuitive along with low noise production and no vibration.

Being an LSA class aircraft, the E430 fully electric airplane is powered by a 40 KW engine which is supplied by a 72 kg lithium polymer battery pack. However, before we could fly this environmentally conscious aircraft, we must just keep our fingers crossed until FAA certification testing is finished.

Gateway NV notebook series, we say bargain

Gateway rolls out its fresh series of very bargain-like notebooks. With prices varying between $499 and $599 you get incomparably better specs than not considerably cheaper Asus Eee PC 1008HA Seashell. The confrontation is obvious, however it is still a question whether Geteway NV series is easy to leave with. But as far as I can tell, NV's design is better than the other's in this price group. NV series notebooks will be available some time soon. Specs follow.

Gateway NV5214u is what you get for $499. It has a 1366 x 768 resolution 16 : 9 HD Ultrabright LED display, 4GB Dual-channel DDR2 system memory, HDMI and VGA ports, four USB ports, 6 cell battery, 802.11a/b/g/Draft-N WiFi, 320 Gigs, built-in webcam – a lot of different stuff. The next Gateway NV5807u model for $599 has all the same except for processor – 2.1GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T6500 versus AMD Athlon 64 X2 QL-64 Dual Core with same clock speed, but we all now for what we pay here, right? As you might have already guessed, chipsets are also different. But that's not all. Gateway also equips these two models with different GPUs. Its Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD (NV5214u) versus ATI Radeon HD 3200 (NV5214u). All in all enough of everything to run preinstalled Windows Vista Home Premium. Final verdict: bargain.

Electrolux Rendez-Vous interactive table

Cooking takes a lot of time and some of us feel as if we are missing on better things in life while we spend countless hours cooking. As technology is mostly considered helpful to day-to-day life, Electrolux came up with an idea that will for sure ease some people’s lives. Electrolux Rendez-Vous is said to be the table that can do anything - combining living, eating and spending time with your loved ones all in one. Being the first interactive table, it certainly helps with the limited space problem, bringing a new wave of kitchen gadgets that are creative and also present multiple advantages.

The key factor to Electrolux Rendez-Vous is its “energy shield” that will transmit power wirelessly to any electrical appliance, leaving no need for users to plug in their blender, phone or iPod to work or be charged. The top of the table is also equipped with inductive cooking system that applies sensor technology. It is curious to notice about Electrolux Rendez-Vous that no cooking zones are specifically marked; instead, heat is dispersed wherever the pan is positioned.

As mentioned before one of the advantages of Electrolux Rendez-Vous is the fact that it will most likely save much house space, consequently, beneath the table are modular drawers that are designed to hold various kitchen appliances that the user needs. For those that aren’t very good at cooking, there is a virtual chef programmed in the Electrolux Rendez-Vous, guiding consumers through certain steps in cooking.

Although there is no word of release yet, Electrolux Rendez-Vous appears to be a creative solution to multiple difficulties. Cooking can slowly become more a social activity than just a simple need.

Promising fuel cell powered Kawasaki Synergy concept race bike

The Kawasaki Synergy concept bike seems to be a race bike designed by transport design Coventry University designer Piers Prendergast who reveals its sustainable concept bike. This ecologically conscious race bike is a zero emission replica which is powered by hydrogen fuel cells.

This green bike is designed to change the vision of traditional environmentally friendly bikes. The cunning design includes its angular bodywork making it look like a sporty model and advanced hubless wheels to make it a real stunner while its driving range is almost 150 miles.

This is expected to be a like sport bike with performance of 125cc to 250cc thanks to its 5kW fuel cells. Its up to date wheels operate through a strongly positioned inner rim as well as spinning outer rim which rotates on internal bearings.

Mostly the rear wheel works as a huge bearing while the tire is fixed to the outer rim. As electromagnet rotates the outer rim, its center remains unchanged. The electromagnet is also capable of regaining some power via regenerative braking. Compressed hydrogen fuel cylinders are positioned in the fuel tank.

Toshiba Qosmio G50W/95JW this July

Just in couple of weeks from now Toshiba is going to add a new model of notebook to its shelves. Named Qosmio G50W/95JW it is a very slight refinement of G50. Qosmio G50 was released quite a considerable time ago and since its very first days has already gone through variations with hardware and model name. The Qosmio GX was planed to be Christmas Time bestseller and now its turn of G50W/95JW to fancy customers.

In fact, there is not very much to fancy for the added price I shall say, but anyway here are the specs. And I start with what I expected to be changed but it wasn't. G50W/95JW has same international V.90 modem and Gigabit Ethernet LAN. Built-in 3G broadband antenna would be cool but no. The original Qosmio G50 still has a decent GPU (NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT) and enough RAM (2 x 2,048 MB DDR2) so they remained untouched. It appears so that manufacturers of the G50 were pushing things up a little bit because it was designed to run Genuine Windows Vista which always needed a bit more of everything over its required specifications. In future if you install Windows 7 on G50 or on G50W/95JW it will be even better.

So finally the changes are made to processor. The new Core 2 Duo T9600 runs at 2.8GHz which is 0.14GHz faster than the previous one and Intel PM45 Express Chipset is still there. HDD now has 500GB though you could have even a bigger one before. The price is about 3,175.00 USD. The rumors were that Qosmio G50W/95JW comes out in end of July but we heard that it will on July, 2.

Handmade wooden Apple iPod mini case and dock.

You have probably recognized the shape of stale iPod mini. Under the wooden covering there actually is a working player. To be honest when I saw it, it started to annoy me. At first I though someone decided it was a good idea make these things out of rubber sheet and dare to sell for double the price though it is not particularly a looker, tough or interesting in anyway. But then it totally made me change my mind.

There is one thing about the wooden iPod mini that cancelled my bad opinion about it. It appeared to be an absolutely non commercial project of a man from Australia. And for me that's makes a difference because the man behind it was after no other reason but expressing himself. Josh, iLounge reader, took his own iPod mini and let ingenuity do its job. In the issue he had a red cedar case, click wheel out of camphor laurel – all assembled with true screws and double-side adhesive (for the click wheel mostly). Josh hasn't stopped here. He also redecorated his iTrip and iPod dock in the same way with the adjustment for wider iPod dimensions. Well done, mate!

Worldwide largest multi-cylinder Kawasaki motorcycle in action

Well known bike maker Simon Whitlock has created a fabulous replica, his newly revamped Kawasaki bike. This Kawasaki motorcycle comes with a powerful 48-cylinder engine and is constructed from sets of engines from Kawasaki S1/KH250. This bad boy also features a displacement of 4200 cubic centimeters while instead of one engine, there are six inline engines.

Each engine has its independent crankshaft while being fixed with gears and run via a BMW transmission. This monstrous engine applies 6 Jaguar E-Type distributors while its 75 cc pony motor is placed under the seat of the bike. Plustek OpticBook A300 - A3 scans with care

Plustek has announced today a new model of scanner for their already accomplished range of scanners. The new OpticBook A300 is aimed to help designers, librarians, students, etc. to scan different kinds of books, even quite thick exemplars. Nipping on ahead, I should that because of the estimated price you probably wouldn't happen to see the A300 in student's dormitory. Anyway, so far it seems a really well made piece of office inventory with a lot of features, so Plustek will probably be offering a bargain when OpticBook A300 goes on sale.

Speaking of features, the idea behind A300 was to make book scanning trouble free for both scanner and a book. In the final analysis, you can easily stuff A300 with A3 size as well as an old tumbled down book in thick cover. Judging by the picture you don’t have to keep the book wide opened, neither you won't have to push the hood down hard and still and up with odd shadows as Plustek confirms. More features – fast scanning (2.4 sec. for an A3 page at 300dpi), USB 2.0 interface, automatic conversion to .pdf, .bmp and other popular formats. I also liked built in optical character recognition (OCR) software. We know that Plustek OpticBook A300 should come out really soon, but there is nothing said about price or anything else.

Xbox 360 Arcade gets the double memory from now on, 512MB overall

Absolutely unexpectedly Microsoft decided to put some more memory in the Xbox 360 Arcade. Even more interesting is that guys from MS didn't seem to hurry up with the announcement but instead just started shipments with bigger flash memory modules. The fact that Xbox 360 Arcade has become double memory richer was discovered accidently when an Xbox hardware veteran has disintegrated a fresh device made for Japanese market.

After the discovery started to fill the Web, official statement came immediately. Following it, the change is aimed for better user experience. Mind you, that Xbox 360 Arcade comes without internal hard drive and onboard flash memory is used by system. Obviously now we can't stop thinking that a firmware upgrade is coming or something in this vein. Or more memory is needed for extra functionality we were told about at E3 – integration with Facebook, Twitter and other social networks. Anyway, the price is still the same – 199 USD.

Get your true colors with Real Life Color Picker

In Photoshop, there’s a little pen which will copy the color settings of anything on your monitor screen so you can use it as your color in the program. Well, think of the Real Life Color Picker as … well, a real life version of just that – only for the real world.

The Color Picker can scan any color in the real world by placing the head of the pen against the object of color and pressing the scan button. Color sensors inside the pen talk to the attached RGB cartridge, which then mixes the proper proportions of red, green and blue to come up with an accurate ink color. It can then be used for artistic purposes like drawing or simply writing with it. Very cool.

I can see literally hundreds of possibilities for hobbyists – particularly scrapbookers and costumers looking to match the color of a particular garment or wallpaper sample in order to then get the right swatch to create the perfect scrap book page or costume. Or simply someone like my wife, who’s been writing in a journal non stop since she was 13 (now 42) and getting ink to suit her mood at the time.

It’s just a concept right now, but if this sucker gets funding, I can see Parker or Paper Mate picking this up just in time for school.

ReBit – Time Machine for Windows

“Time machine for Windows.”

That was pretty much how the conversation surrounding the Rebit product went and I can’t think of a better description so I’m stealing it! (with apologies to Apple…).
Rebit copies any and all changes made to your PC onto a backup drive, silently and automatically. If you ever need to go back to a previous version of a file you can use the normal windows explorer interface to inspect the disk as it was at any given date.
The system manages space automatically – if you make a change to a file every day for example then you’ll have lots of previous versions. As the drive gets low on space it removes the oldest copies automatically to make way for the newer ones.
Because it’s a complete system copy it can also recover a failed machine. You can boot up a machine using the recovery CD, pick a date and it will restore the PC to the exact state it was in at that time.
You can buy it packaged into various capacities of USB hard drive or as a separate software install if you already have spare storage. It can use any hard drive, built in or external as it’s backup store but not a network share (yet). Personally I quite like the idea of partnering it with one of these but that’s probably just because I’m looking for an excuse to buy a fireproof hard drive!

EMTEC Gdium - a netbook with a G-Key

There’s a multitude of netbooks on the market at the moment, so I nearly walked straight past the new one from EMTREC, the Gdium mobile netbook. The unique selling point of the Gdium is that it has no storage and must be booted from a USB drive, known as the G-Key.

The G-Key contains the OS (Linux), applications and user data and slots undeneath the front of the machine. The idea behind it is that each user will have their own G-Key so one Gdium netbook could be shared between multiple users with no risk at all to others’ data. It’s an interesting idea, though with the relative cheap price of netbooks I’m not sure if sharing one is really needed though if you could also use the G-Key in other machines it would make carrying a PC in your pocket a something of a reality.

Dlink DCS-1130 motorised network camera

Not a new product category, but as usual time and technology brings products that were once the domain of big business down to a more consumer friendly level.

The DLink DCS-1130 security / web camera is motorised for pan/tilt adjustment, wireless and can be controlled via a web browser. It can store the video on a PC or send it out to the web but I like the third option of viewing it on a 3G phone so you can monitor the builders / burglers / cheating spouses live in realtime.

The Car that Runs on Air and Magnets

With fuel prices rising and supplies dwindling, more and more inventors are turning their creativity towards cars that work without the need for barrels of gasoline. True, there have been a number of vehicles released that run on electricity but now designers are turning to another precious resource – air.
It’s not a new concept, as early as the 1920s, car designers were dabbling with the idea of cars that could run off air alone – one involved cycling air through a propeller at the front of the car – but few came to fruition. Now, designers are again looking at how air can be used to power a car.

Magnetic Air Cars, Inc, a company based in San Jose, California, recently revealed their sleek new design for the world’s first fuel-less car at the eco convention, West Coast Green. As the name suggests, the ‘Magnetic Air Car’ will be powered through magnetic technology and compressed air. When air is channeled through the engine, the resultant airflow is converted to torque, which in turn powers the axis and propels the car. This process is powered by a silicon energy storage battery, which can be charged in an hour and has a 10-year lifespan and is 95% recyclable, making this new-age creation possibly one of the most sustainable cars on the planet.
Executives from the company have announced they’re planning to build a working prototype soon and could have it ready for full production as early as 2010. Bring it on!

Android 2.0 Donut will arrive in autumn

Only two months ago Android has had its update to the version 1.5 code named "Cupcake". We liked it a lot. In best Android fashion the SDK was released in ahead and the firmware itself was refined in its major UI, browsing and performance pillars. Totally surprisingly for me, the next generation of Android OS is ready to join in approximately around autumn of this year. The more official info says that 2.0 "Donut" version will be released after three or six months from now. The thing is though that we are speaking here about revolutionary new operating system in the meaning of very few of its components were taken from the current versions.

Android 2.0 Donut is still under tissue of conspiracy but some plausible user experience improvements are already known. Search feature will incorporate Google and device search simultaneously. A lot of work seems be done in the area of speech-to-text conversion adding the possibility to pronounce a search inquiry as well handwriting it on touch sensitive smartphones. It is said that some of software for Android 2.0 was developed by SVOX company from Swiss.

As a prognosis, I suggest gesture input and Adobe's Flash improvements. The last one has a longer story behind it. Recently Adobe has announced that they are going to make Flash content cross-platform for desktops and mobile gadgets and even offer donations for willing developers. And I can perfectly see why. NEXT GENERATION LAPTOPS

The invention of computers has changed the world forever. They have changed the way we work, shop and even manage household chores. But that wasn’t enough for they had to make way for portable notebooks or laptops. These laptops began to be used in all walks of life. And with the continuous advances in technology, these laptops have become faster, lighter and better performing. But you can be assured that these enhancements will never take a back seat. This fact is further strengthened by the introduction of the Next Generation Laptops which not only possess the conventional features but loads of enhancements which make them much more useful devices. These laptops run on a more advanced technology and have many new features.

A Next Generation Laptop
The most important factor that sets these next generation laptops apart from the conventional ones is their processor. Almost all these laptops are built around a Quad Core processor which is much faster than its predecessors. It has the ability to perform more number of operations in the same time. Also the cache memory and virtual memory are much larger in size to ensure a very fast operation. They are extremely light in weight so as to improve its portability. These laptops also feature an integrated web cam with high resolution along with Bluetooth technology. The users can transfer files to a remote computer or device enabled with the Bluetooth technology in an instant. They also have Wifi technology that enables their users to access the World Wide Web wherever there are hot spots for wireless networks. However, some of these features are also available on the conventional laptops. Then what is really special about these ‘Next Generation Laptops’?

The next generation laptops use very advanced technology which allows the users to switch from one language to another or even the layout of the keyboard according to the language chosen. They also feature several precision controlling parameters like key pressure and speed. Moreover, the display settings can be changed quickly to gaming mode and enabling virtual joysticks. There are other applications like music composers and video editors as well.
Some companies manufacturing next generation laptops use Flash Memory rather than Hard Disk Drive. Flash memories can store more data and allow the users to switch on their laptops instantly. Although the cost of these flash memories is undoubtedly high at the moment owing to the high tech technology, their prices are most likely to come down over the next few months. They allow the laptops to pick up extra high speeds while performing operations.

A Dell Next Generation Dual LCD Laptop

These laptops also feature a very interesting and useful technology called Blu ray disc. The Blu ray technology is an advanced optical disc format which is specially designed to store a large amount of data. It also allows the users to rewrite, record and playback very high definition videos. It offers capacity more than five times (up to 50GB) than that of a dual layer DVD. It also supports the playback of high definition feature films as well. The Blu ray disc technology has received global support and is very likely to become the standard optical drive for the future. Although some laptops have already started to incorporate the Blu ray optical technology in their laptops, others are yet to do so because of the high cost of this drive. These high performance drives are set to become a significant part of the entertainment industry. Apart for being used for entertainment purposes, these drives are also being used for storing excess data which would otherwise require additional hard disc drive. The Blu ray discs have the same physical size as that of a CD or a conventional DVD but store data which is much more in size. To emphasize the scope of the Blu ray technology, a staggering 170 companies have supported this format for a variety of purposes like computer games, music, movies and consumer electronics. Out of the eight major Hollywood studios, seven have already started supporting the Blu ray technology for their movies and more than 100 movies have already been released in this format. The next generation laptops featuring this technology cost more than $3000. Laptop manufacturers who have supported this technology are Dell, Toshiba and Sony.

There is another technology which has not been released as yet but is expected soon and allows the users to switch from one operating system to another in order to play movies, view email or surf the internet. This feature is known as HyberSpace and is manufactured by Phoenix Technologies which is a leading software manufacturer controlling most of the Windows features. This technology will allow the users to boot the system in a few seconds, skipping the normal Windows startup which takes a lot of time. It will also allow the users to put the Windows into sleep mode and save battery time. Laptops featuring HyperSpace will have a separate button which will allow the users to switch away from Windows instantly. This technology is still in the developing stage and it is likely that applications like Web Browsers, Web conferencing applications like Skype and email programs will be built into HyperSpace. Along with this, system applications like anti virus scanning can be performed even when not using Windows. This technology provides vast flexibility to its users and will be based on Linux which is a freely distributed Operating System.
The next generation laptops will also feature a new USB design which will allow almost instant file transfers. USB has become the standard for connecting devices. The new USB technology is called the USB 3.0 Promoter Group. While a standard high speed USB 2.0 device takes almost 14 minutes to download a high definition 27 GB movie, the new USB 3.0 takes only 70 seconds.

The Ultra Fast USB 3.0
With all kinds of technology being developed and incorporated into a single laptop, the conventional laptops used widely today will soon become useless. One can only wonder if this technology can be bettered in the future.

The major innovator that’s not a console maker

Which was the most innovative, risk-taking company at the E3 video game trade show in Los Angeles this week - Microsoft with its Project Natal sensor, Sony with its “glowing orb” stick or Nintendo with its Wii Vitality Sensor?

How about none of the above? The answer after the jump.

Ubisoft.

Yes, this leading publisher appears to be working on a motion-sensing controller, a Surface-type computer project and the first major 3D stereoscopic game, all at the same time.

At its press conference on Monday, Ubisoft scoffed at waiting around until “December 2010″ for Microsoft’s motion-sensing camera to arrive.

Instead, it would produce its own motion-sensing camera in time for this holiday season and bundle it with its Your Shape fitness game for the Nintendo Wii.

It also showed a trailer for its forthcoming real-time strategy PC game calledR.U.S.E. It featured two players sat at a table with an embedded screen, rather like Microsoft’s surface computer.

They marshalled and deployed their forces with sweeping gestures of their hands across the tabletop. It looked very futuristic and mocked-up, but as Ubisoft later demonstrated at its booth, the technology is more than vapourware.

After the press conference I spoke to Yves Guillemot, Ubisoft chief executive, and James Cameron, director of movie blockbusters such as Titanic and a leading proponent of 3D technology.

Mr Guillemot said of the R.U.S.E. table: “It’s real and it works”, and he explained his approach to hardware innovation thus:

“Everything that is invented that can give better accessibility to the game and allowing gamers to express themselves, it is helping us get more people to play and the learning experience is much faster.”

Mr Cameron (pictured) had spoken at length at the press conference about his new movie Avatar, four years in the making and due for release in December.

The 3D big-screen experience will be preceded by the release of the game in stereoscopic 3D, requiring gamers to wear special glasses to get the full experience on a television.

“I think gaming will actually drive 3D into the home more than movies,” he said.

“I think that after everyone sees the Avatar game, they will want more.”

That is something Ubisoft appears to be betting on with its market-leading initiative. All three of its innovations would have appeared to be gimmicks in the past, but the industry has realised it now has the technological ability to perfect this hardware and a market of accessory-addicted gamers that can’t wait to have it delivered to them.
