0-60 Magazine D. Y. I. R-CADE for ultimate Need For Speed: Shift experience

The idea of personal space for working named cabinet is sure helpful if you boss wants you to be productive. But what if you want your leisure to be productive? And, oh yeah, coincidently, you happen to be a computer racing simulator fan. Then you almost certainly you have caught yourself thinking that you must have a gaming simulator at some point. To be honest, this really is ridiculous, well at least a bit: it costs whooping aging saloon money, you can’t actually use it for anything other than playing racing games and you shouldn’t reveal it to your sweetheart before you marry her as much as you shouldn’t do it afterwards. A dead-end? – No. Guys from 0-60 Magazine have recently worked their way to an affordable computerized cabinet so that you won’t need to look back bringing your dream to life.

0-60 Magazine have managed to squeeze their "D. Y. I. R-CADE" driving console into just half a thousand dollars in which you just pop in your existing gaming rig and set off burning rubber. The proposed set-up includes a PlayStation 3, Samsung LN40b550 40 inch LED monitor, Logitech G27 steering wheel, Logitech G51 5.1 surround sound system and a Sparco Chrono Road seat and lot of MDF sheets, plywood sheets, bolts, nails, nuts… But don’t wary though because 0-60 have got everything figured out in their downloadable PDF guide to your very personal D. Y. I. R-CADE pictured above. As you noticed, they have dedicated their guide and its end-result to the recently released Need For Speed: Shift.

They also have a sweepstake going on for US residents. Prizes are pretty much exactly what you need for your racing cabinet.

NovoThink Solar Surge charger for iPhones and iPods

We got used to see solar chargers appearing all around especially before summer. We’ve seen and reviewed a good slag of them. Mostly, solar chargers require a bit of compromise in day-to-day usage – freedom they offer can be bogged down by taking care of them like leaving the thing in the sun and carrying extra weight. Anyway, here is a one more solar power gadget, the one for iPhone and iPod this time.

NovoThink, the company which designed and is selling Solar Surge solar charger for iPhone/iPod has done an amazing thing. First, NovoThink has approved their solar cell case at Apple, which means it will actually work. Second, it’s specs are really impressive. Solar panel distributes 5.5V at 100 mAh if there is no clouds whatsoever, then, after two hours you will have 30 minutes talk time on 3G and double that on 2G. Solar Surge inbuilt battery is 20% bigger than the iPhone’s and can be charged via USB 2.0 while synchronizing data. Approximate dimensions are: 4.9" x 2.7" x 0.9", weight is 7 oz. In addition you can choose from a vast variety of colors. The only problem about the Surge I can imagine is that high temperatures may cause problems for lithium ion batteries which is kind of worrying if it’s meant to stay in the sun.

Crysis on iPhone thanks to OTOY and AMD next-gen GPU

This isn't a prank really. Crysis on iPhone does mean exactly the same game by which performance gamers have been measuring desktop abilities for the last couple of years now and a standard Apple smartphone. We don't even say you'll need a latest iPhone 3GS or even 3.0 firmware to pull that out. All you need is an OTOY 780KB app and that's it. But there sure is a lot behind the scenes in which we are also interested, so let's have a look at how on Earth it is possible.

Hardcore desktop 3D gaming on a smartphone has a lot to do with AMD's recently unveiled next-gen GPUs. Features like DirectX 11 support and 2.5 teraFLOPS floating point made OTOY think of using these enormous powers for "remote" gaming. Yep, no foolies, you haven't seriously suggested that someone shoved an AMD GPU into a poor iPhone, right? Game rendering is done on OTOY servers and then pushed to the phone. The above named name app copes only with I/O. And it's not just Crysis I should say. Demos of GTA 4, WOW and Bioshock have already been qualified as gameable.

Basically, the idea is great, especially for MMO games. The trouble is though, how are they going to license remote gaming? Because the end result is almost as a good as a purchased version of the game delivers.

Apple tablet rumored for Februry 2010, do you like MacBook Touch name?

Half a year back, and this is a nice thing to bring up for me, we were thinking and talking about how is Apple going to update its gadgets, with what features and what functionality. Because most of it was imaginary, very exiting therefore, or maybe because Apply has though it is really very good idea to launch an internet tablet, we are now going to do the same thing as before.

Yes, a tablet. A touchscreen internet gadget with fast bandwidth speeds and a big battery for endless fun. Unlike CrunchPad and if we are informed well, Apply is not going to limit the upcoming tablet with just internet functionality. What we know about it at the moment is that it is going o have a P. A. Semi processor, a DynaPack battery that will let do your internet research and then get carried away playing games or social networking more likely. 9.6 inch display is not confirmed to be not OLED so we keep our fingers crossed for that. HSDPA, of course, Wi-Fi also probably. Prices vary from 799 to 999 USD which overall makes it land somewhere between a proper smartphone and a good laptop. I just wonder, how much functionality of both Apple tablet will be able to take when it comes out next February?

Oh yeah, how would you like to call it a MacBook Touch?

Ferrari has unveiled its latest replica, the Ferrari 458 Italia to be showcased at the Frankfurt Motor Show to come. This all-new driving marvel is said to feature a new interior layout with main controls positioned on the steering wheel of the car. The Ferrari 458 Italia seems to be a mid-engined model that appears to have replaced the 430.

The chassis of the car is made of aluminum while its innovative 4, 5 liter, direct injected 4499 cc V8 engine produces staggering 570 horsepower at 9 000 revolutions per minute. Razer announces MMO gaming orientated Naga mouse

News from Gamescom 2009 and indeed good news because we forever had been thinking of how many buttons can there be on a mouse? Razer is right there with a new gaming Naga mouse. Do want to have a guess how many buttons they have stuffed on it? Wrong – its 17. The thing is Naga is not covered randomly with them, on left side it has a full 12 piece numeric keyboard which is there to help with gaming so you don’t have to roam all around the actual keyboard and keep the left hand exclusively on movement controls.

Behind the new design we find a familiar 5600dpi engine with 1ms response time. Enough for MMO games really, but in addition to Naga, Razer offers Add On software which allows Naga users to create unlimited number of profiles all with unique commands and key presets. And, finally, to sum up gaming enthusiasm, Razer also offers a Megasoma gaming mouse mat. This will suit optical and laser units for 49.99 USD. Razer Naga for size runs up to 79.99 USD. Well, who said MMO gaming is cheap?

MSI X-Slim X600 hits Amazon with 799.99 USD on the tag

It is about now for MSI X-Slim X600 to go for sale, which it does today. At this point there are probably not many people left who are overly exited by this news because most of specs and photos have been here and there for quite a time now. In this case, the only readers to whom we should address here are those who actually already decided to get an X-Slim X600. One thing I like about MSI notebooks was that they tend to not overprice what they are selling. X600 costs 799.99 USD at Amazon, enough to step back and think over purchase ones again.

While you are thinking how many gallons of petrol an Asus Eee 1008HA Seashell will save you, I will remind what you are paying for. X-Slim X600 sports a 1.4GHz Intel Core 2 Solo on a GS45+ICH9M-SFF chipset. Two units of 200-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM memory, 2GB each. I especially like its video card – its ATI Radeon HD 4330, 512MB – not a thriller, of course, but I was expecting less at first and good job they didn’t mess with Intel inbuilt graphics. MSI X600 is perfectly capable of running your all-time favorite 3D game, do you see what I mean? Back to specs, for 799.99 USD you also get a 6 cell battery, 320GB SATA HDD and a 15.6 inch WXGA LCD with 1366 x 768 res and 16 : 9 aspect ratio. Still kinda pricy? – that what I think, but then it will last till you decide to get another laptop, and then it will last a couple more years, hopefully.

12 Words You Can Never Say in the Office

If you're old enough to understand the reference in this headline -- George Carlin, anyone? -- then you're old enough to need a refresher course when it comes to talking about technology.

This list is useful for 20-somethings, too. Now when the senior person in the office uses one of these terms, you'll know what he's talking about.

1. Intranet

Popular in the mid-90s, the term "intranet" referred to a private network running the Internet Protocol and other Internet standards such as the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP). It was also used to describe an internal Web site that was hosted behind a firewall and was accessible only to employees. Today, every private network runs IP. So you can just use the term virtual private network or VPN to describe a private IP-based network.

2. Extranet

An "extranet" referred to private network connections based on Internet standards such as IP and HTTP that extended outside an organization, such as between business partners. Extranets often replaced point-to-point electronic data interchange (EDI) connections that used standards such as X12. Today, companies provide suppliers, resellers and other members of their supply chain with access to their VPNs.

3. Web Surfing

When is the last time you heard someone talk about surfing the Web? You know the term is out of date when your kids don't know what it means. To teens and tweens, the Internet and the World Wide Web are one and the same thing. So it's better to use the term "browsing" the Web if you want to be understood.

4. Push Technology

The debate over the merits of "push" versus "pull" technology came to a head in 1996 with the release of the PointCast Network, a Web service that sent a steady stream of news to subscribers. However, PointCast and other push technology services required too much network bandwidth. Eventually, push technology evolved into RSS feeds, which remain the preferred method for publishing information to subscribers of the Internet. RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication.

5. Application Service Provider (ASP)

During this decade, the term "Application Service Provider" evolved into "Software-as-a-Service." Both terms refer to a vendor hosting a software application and providing access to it over the Web. Customers buy the software on a subscription basis, rather than having to own and operate it themselves. ASP was a hot term prior to the dot-com bust. Then it was replaced by "SaaS." Now it's cool to talk about "cloud computing."

6. Personal Digital Assistant (PDA)

Coined by former Apple CEO John Sculley back in 1992 when he unveiled the Apple Newton, the term "personal digital assistant" referred to a handheld computer. PDA was still in use in 1996, when the Palm Pilot was the hottest handheld in corporate America. Today, the preferred generic term for a handheld like a Blackberry or an iPhone is a "smartphone".

7. Internet Telephony

You need to purge the term "Internet telephony" from your vocabulary and switch to VoIP, for Voice over IP. Even the term VoIP is getting old-fashioned because pretty soon all telephone calls will be routed over the Internet rather than the Public Switched Telephone Network. It's probably time to stop referring to the PSTN, too, because it is headed for the history books as all voice, data and video traffic is carried on the Internet.

8. Weblog

A blog is a shortened version of "Weblog," a term that emerged in the late 1990s to describe commentary that an individual publishes online. It spawned many words still in use such as "blogger" and "blogosphere." Nowadays, few people have time to blog so they are "microblogging," which is another word that's heading out the door as people turn Twitter into a generic term for blasting out 140-character observations or opinions.

9. Thin Client

You have to give Larry Ellison credit for seeing many of the flaws in the client/server computing architecture and for popularizing the term "thin client" to refer to Oracle's alternative terminal-like approach. In 1993, Ellison was touting thin clients as a way for large organizations to improve network security and manageability. Although thin clients never replaced PCs, the concept is similar to "virtual desktops" that are gaining popularity today as a way of supporting mobile workers.

10. Rboc

In 1984, the U.S. government forced AT&T to split up into seven Regional Bell Operating Companies [RBOCs] also known as Baby Bells. Customers bought local service from RBOCs and long-distance service from carriers such as AT&T. Telecom industry mergers over the last 15 years have formed integrated local- and long-distance carriers such as AT&T, Verizon and Qwest. This makes not only the term RBOC obsolete, but also the terms ILEC for Incumbent Local Exchange Carrier [i.e., GTE] and CLEC for Competitive Local Exchange Carrier [i.e., MFS].

11. Long-Distance Call

Thanks to flat-rate calling plans available from carriers for at least five years, nobody needs to distinguish between local and long-distance calls anymore. Similarly, you don't need to distinguish between terrestrial and wireless calls because so many people use only wireless services. Like pay phones, long-distance calls -- and their premium prices -- are relics of a past without national and unlimited calling plans.

12. World Wide Web

Nobody talks about the "World Wide Web" anymore, or the "Information Superhighway," for that matter. It's just the Internet. It's a distinction that Steve Czaban, the popular Fox Sports Radio talk show host, likes to mock when he refers to the "Worldwide Interweb." Nothing dates you more than pulling out one of those old-fashioned ways of referring to the Internet such as "infobahn" or "electronic highway."

No more eye strain with the Wink glasses

For all those gamers who sit in front of their monitors for extended period of time it would be wise to know that shortage in winking might be a cause of tunnel vision. Here is an ingenious device called the Wink glasses that save the situation. Developed by Japanese Masunaga Optical Manufacturing Company, this helpful device will make all the gamers’ brain reel at how easy and important wearing of this clip-on device might be.

If you have noticed how often you were experiencing eye strain after long hours in front of your PC, you would feel the difference but regretfully this is going to be available in Japan. If you happen to be in Japan and have this wonderful gizmo you may easily attach it to the spectacles you are wearing, if any. Once attached, the Wink glasses will keep check on how often you blink to correct you when necessary.

The secret of the Wink glasses lies behind its embedded sensors that are capable of detecting the number of times you were blinking, so if the amount of blinking is not enough your eye sight will be blocked that will make you blinking for a while. Such a technique proves to be a useful way to reduce eye strain. So eye sight preservation is in your hands. The Wink Glasses are expected to be available for 150 USD by August 10.

Additionally, these miraculous glasses are able to last up to 8 hours, so your gaming appetite must be satisfied and if not, there is a USB port to offer you some extra power source. Well, if you are willing to eliminate your eye strain while preserving your eye sight, here is a right gadget to start wearing.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX GPUs liquid cooled by BFG

Submerging a motherboard with all of the adapters and fans inside the case into vegetable oil is indeed not new and not very popular. This has fewer upsides than problems it may cause while assembling and using the PC. Makes it of course more exiting, but prime advantage of all this – liquid cooling – has found interest between overclockers and gamers. So, a liquid cooling kit for a processor alone is an average thing these days. And now we got an announcement from BFG which sais they will do VGA cards with liquid cooling.

BFG's plans on this embrace only NVIDIA's GPUs. Two models of the top GeForce range are going to be fitted with BFG ThermoIntelligence Advanced Cooling Solutions on purpose, which surely is better performance. This works out well for BFG GeForce GTX 295 H2OC and BFG GeForce GTX 295 H2OC – both get 100 – 200 MHz faster clock speeds at core, shaders and memory.

Another important thing is that BFG ThermoIntelligence Advanced Cooling Solutions require no service during maintenance whatsoever: no assemblage, no coolant change – nothing. It even provides variable and adjustable performance. Three settings: quiet, auto and maximum are aimed to balance between cooling power and noise. I just hope noise in maximum position is tolerable because generally the idea is good and hopefully be applied to more graphic cards.

Mouse Computer NextGear L720EV4-WS64 - another gaming PC from the East

Mouse Computer is rolling out another hi-end personal computer. This is the second one in this month and a second gaming PC this summer. The first one is of course the MASTERPIECE V1200. The latest one - NextGear L720EV4-WS64 – is quite a lot less stuffed, but is also a lot cheaper. One thing about it warns me though – considering its gaming intensions, NextGear L720EV4-WS64 may not be future proof, as a momentary choice it's quite alright. Specs follow.

In the case, which is very much like MDV Extreme ST 5930's, we find an Intel Core i7-920. It must have x64 architecture because it also sports 6GB of PC3-10600 DDR3 RAM. Graphic processing rests on a 1GB GDDR3 NVIDIA GeForce GTS250 (the main reason why I call L720EV4-WS64 not future proof). Rest is pretty standard: 1TB SATA II HDD, DVD Super Multi optical drive and MS Vista Home Premium. All 918 in Euro terms (126,000 JPY).

Metrokane V-Gauge Wine Preserver to keep your wine fresh

Quite often when you have those wine parties you just do not drink to the dregs instead you leave the wine bottle unfinished for the next time. The question is that when you corked it, there is the air still left in the bottle and this is bad for wine quality as it gets sour in no time. In order to preserve your wine you will need a vacuum pump so that the air could be removed from the bottle. Called Metrokane V-Gauge Wine Preserver, this clever gadget is designed to preserve your wine.

The Metrokane V-Gauge wine preserver sports a special dial that let you know if the proper vacuum seal is achieved. This wine preserver is easy to use and all you need is just put your vacuum pump so that the air could be eliminated. Made of stainless steel, the vacuum pump makes it possible you to chooser the necessary vacuum for ideal wine preservation.

While pumping, the gauge should reach the red zone and once it is achieved you may be sure that your wine bottle is completely sealed. Wherever the needle drops, you are able to pump until the red zone is reached. The Metrokane V-Gauge wine preserver seems to be dishwasher safe and is covered by 10 year limited warranty.

Fly a spy kite and take digital pictures of aerial panorama

What would you do if there was a windy day? I am sure one thing will cross your mind is to fly a kite. What could be more sensational than watching your kite flying away? The idea to attach a camera to a kite is not innovative but this time there is a solution found which makes your kite flying securely while taking digital pictures on the go.

This spy kite is capable of taking digital images while opening up a miraculous aerial panorama. The kite comes equipped with a mounted digital camera which is connected to your remote control through the kite line. So most likely this is going to be your first aerial pictures experience on the move with you standing on the ground.

Another important thing to mention is that there is not any display on the remote control so it is up to you to find out what the kite can really see to take a picture. The best idea is possibly to take photos by intuition so that some memorable shots could be taken.

The remote control line of the kite is 25 meters in length so the height of your kite is limited. The camera weighs just 50 grams so it seems to be flight worthy. The spy kite is constructed from high durability nylon along with solid fiber glass supports. It is powered by AAA batteries which are not included.

This high performance kite measures 4 cm in height, 120 cm in width and 60 cm in diameter while storage capacity of the camera comes to 25 pictures taken at 640 x 480 resolution or about 305 pictures if shots are taken at 320 x 200 resolution.

Its mounted memory capacity is 4 MB so once you have taken enough pictures you may easily upload them to your personal computer using USB port. This flying gadget seems to be suitable for 3 years old children and allows taking shots at different intervals including 15, 30, 60 or 90 second intervals. The kite with a camera is available for 48, 20 USD.

NVIDIA 40nm GPUs are on thier way

It looks like finally ATI Radeon HD 4770 is going to find its match. As expected, it is NVIDIA who is going to roll out graphics cards with a benefit of 40nm fabrication process. You might have heard their plans about 40nm GPUs long before, but there was a very good reason that was holding them back. Now it is obsolete and NVIDIA is almost certainly planning some next gen graphics cards for September.

NVIDIA's long time partner TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company) was facing a problem of low yields on 40nm processes. Naturally it became a stumbling stone for NVIDIA also. Now TSMC reports yield point improvements, so there is a little doubt that end users will not benefit from new GeForce GT210 (GT218) and GeForce G220 (GT216) before middle autumn.

The benefits of the 40nm fabrication process are mostly concealed in GPU's dimensions – they are smaller. In perspective it means more powerful graphics units for both notebooks and desktops.

Electrolux Rendez-Vous interactive table

Cooking takes a lot of time and some of us feel as if we are missing on better things in life while we spend countless hours cooking. As technology is mostly considered helpful to day-to-day life, Electrolux came up with an idea that will for sure ease some people’s lives. Electrolux Rendez-Vous is said to be the table that can do anything - combining living, eating and spending time with your loved ones all in one. Being the first interactive table, it certainly helps with the limited space problem, bringing a new wave of kitchen gadgets that are creative and also present multiple advantages.

The key factor to Electrolux Rendez-Vous is its “energy shield” that will transmit power wirelessly to any electrical appliance, leaving no need for users to plug in their blender, phone or iPod to work or be charged. The top of the table is also equipped with inductive cooking system that applies sensor technology. It is curious to notice about Electrolux Rendez-Vous that no cooking zones are specifically marked; instead, heat is dispersed wherever the pan is positioned.

As mentioned before one of the advantages of Electrolux Rendez-Vous is the fact that it will most likely save much house space, consequently, beneath the table are modular drawers that are designed to hold various kitchen appliances that the user needs. For those that aren’t very good at cooking, there is a virtual chef programmed in the Electrolux Rendez-Vous, guiding consumers through certain steps in cooking.

Although there is no word of release yet, Electrolux Rendez-Vous appears to be a creative solution to multiple difficulties. Cooking can slowly become more a social activity than just a simple need.

Promising fuel cell powered Kawasaki Synergy concept race bike

Toshiba Qosmio G50W/95JW this July

Just in couple of weeks from now Toshiba is going to add a new model of notebook to its shelves. Named Qosmio G50W/95JW it is a very slight refinement of G50. Qosmio G50 was released quite a considerable time ago and since its very first days has already gone through variations with hardware and model name. The Qosmio GX was planed to be Christmas Time bestseller and now its turn of G50W/95JW to fancy customers.

In fact, there is not very much to fancy for the added price I shall say, but anyway here are the specs. And I start with what I expected to be changed but it wasn't. G50W/95JW has same international V.90 modem and Gigabit Ethernet LAN. Built-in 3G broadband antenna would be cool but no. The original Qosmio G50 still has a decent GPU (NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT) and enough RAM (2 x 2,048 MB DDR2) so they remained untouched. It appears so that manufacturers of the G50 were pushing things up a little bit because it was designed to run Genuine Windows Vista which always needed a bit more of everything over its required specifications. In future if you install Windows 7 on G50 or on G50W/95JW it will be even better.

So finally the changes are made to processor. The new Core 2 Duo T9600 runs at 2.8GHz which is 0.14GHz faster than the previous one and Intel PM45 Express Chipset is still there. HDD now has 500GB though you could have even a bigger one before. The price is about 3,175.00 USD. The rumors were that Qosmio G50W/95JW comes out in end of July but we heard that it will on July, 2.

Handmade wooden Apple iPod mini case and dock.

You have probably recognized the shape of stale iPod mini. Under the wooden covering there actually is a working player. To be honest when I saw it, it started to annoy me. At first I though someone decided it was a good idea make these things out of rubber sheet and dare to sell for double the price though it is not particularly a looker, tough or interesting in anyway. But then it totally made me change my mind.

There is one thing about the wooden iPod mini that cancelled my bad opinion about it. It appeared to be an absolutely non commercial project of a man from Australia. And for me that's makes a difference because the man behind it was after no other reason but expressing himself. Josh, iLounge reader, took his own iPod mini and let ingenuity do its job. In the issue he had a red cedar case, click wheel out of camphor laurel – all assembled with true screws and double-side adhesive (for the click wheel mostly). Josh hasn't stopped here. He also redecorated his iTrip and iPod dock in the same way with the adjustment for wider iPod dimensions. Well done, mate!
